Facts and Info About Kitesurfing

01.

Kitesurfing utilizes a regular surfboard, a kite as a sail, and a whole lot of your core muscles. It's a mixture of windsurfing and wakeboarding, only with a kite in the air – like parasailing, only you balance on an actual surfboard.

02.

Kitesurfing gained popularity in the 1990s, but kitesailing has been around since the 1400s, when folks in China used kites to boost their canoes to get across the water. Today, over 1 million athletes around the world call themselves kitesurfers.

03.

There are many different styles of kitesurfing, from racing to jumping to freestyle. Freestyle kiteboarding focuses on catching air, while wave-riding is more like regular surfing. Special boards are used for racing, allowing kitesurfers to continuously travel over 1,000 feet.

04.

There is a wide selection of kites to choose from, flat kites to foil kites, ranging from 7 square feet to over 200 square feet in size. Some kites are inflated while others utilize the wind to start sailing. The bigger the kite, the more power it has – but kitesurfers know to choose the right one for how windy it is outside, otherwise they might be carried out to sea!
